Dennis Adonis, of Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, charged with fraudulent conversion and was granted $200,000 bail.
Adonis pleaded not guilty.
The court was told that between December 30, 2009 and January 04, 2010, the accused was entrusted with $542,000 by Fitzroy Pollard to purchase 100 modems. Adonis allegedly converted the money to his own use and benefit. The matter was later reported and Adonis was arrested.
Attorney at law Debra Kumar, appearing for Adonis, told the Magistrate that her client and Pollard were in business together, a claim that Pollard denied.
Adonis is scheduled to return to court on November 29.
Popularly referred to as ‘Smoothie, Adonis has been at the centre of numerous schemes and scams. He was the person who collected money from the wider public under the pretext that he was bringing professional wrestlers from the United States.
That scheme collapsed when the media exposed it.
Other scams included the promised provision of a wireless communication service, the Royal Antigua money transfer service – which collected people’s money from overseas but failed to deliver in Guyana – and numerous so-called training schemes.
