– when AAG had bought ticket
Leslie Black, the Manager and Coach of Guyana’s leading distance runner, Alika Morgan, refused the Athletic Association of Guyana’s (AAG) airline ticket last Friday, opting to let the top athlete travel to Suriname via the Springlands route.
Morgan, whose participation in the second stage of the IAAF South American 10km Road Race Classic was in doubt up to last Thursday, placed a disappointing fifth in the female international race with a below par 45:15.
The AAG had bought airline tickets for Morgan, Cleveland Forde, who won the male race in 31.20, Dennis Horatio, who was third in 34.58 and national debutant, Nathanie Giddings, who placed fourth in 35.29.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that Black was informed that there was a ticket available for his athlete yet the athlete was made to travel to Suriname via road to compete when her health was not at 100 percent.
“We had officially indicated to him (Black) that the athlete was going to Suriname based on her performance in the first stage. We indicated to him that there was an airline ticket available for Morgan to travel,” Boyce indicated.
He reiterated that Morgan could not have travelled with the males Thursday morning because of a persistent illness. She was the first Guyanese female athlete to cross the finish line in the initial stage of the race in Guyana, following which she collapsed.
The athlete subsequently complained about feeling “weak”; complaints that she also echoed after her performance in Suriname. It is against that background that Morgan travelled the distance via road to compete when there was an airline ticket available.
“If it is a case where the information that we have pertaining to her is accurate, the AAG will seriously have to reconsider her for the third leg in Panama,” Boyce said, adding that Black is of the view that the AAG failed to communicate with him.
The head of the athletic association said that after a report from Claude Blackmore, who had the managerial portfolio for the national team, the AAG will be taking what measures are necessary to address this concern. A briefing will be held tomorrow. (Edison Jefford)
