It will be the first time Guyana will be facing Haiti who won the 2006/2007 edition of the tournament when they defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 but those stats will not be on the minds of the Guyanese team, a confident unit going into today’s game.
Guyana, outright winners of Group C hosted in Suriname will be taking it one game at a time according to Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover in a Group known as the ‘Group of Death’ also featuring hosts Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
The Guyanese have brought in experienced midfielder, Chris Nurse based in the USA and along with John Rodrigues, Sean Cameron, Captain Howard Lowe the experienced former Captain Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, Walter Moore who is also no stranger at this level, Shawn Beveney, Dwain Jacobs, Dwight Peters, Chris Bourne and Jake Newton based in England, the ‘Golden Jaguars’ will be a force to reckon with.
Dover reported that since their arrival in the Twin Island Republic, they have worked on their pattern in attack, speed, set plays and team organisation.
“As for the players, they are settled, focused and ready to represent Guyana. We do understand the level of competition we are coming up against but we are here to play positive football. Team spirit is high and with the likes of Pollard, Moore, Beveney, Nurse, Rodrigues, Jacobs, Peters and Cameron among others, we will be very competitive.”
Goalkeeper Ronson Williams will be a key component for the Guyanese who will face Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday and St. Vincent & the Grenadines on Saturday. The first and second placed teams will advance to the finals set for Martinique from November 26.
Meanwhile, at a ceremony to launch the Group, President of the Caribbean Football Union and CONCACAF and Vice President of FIFA, Jack Warner, said; “The Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010 has been an exciting tournament so far with some wonderful displays of football from all the teams who have played – many of which have already improved their standings in the official FIFA World rankings and the CONCACAF rankings.
“I would like to congratulate Guyana and St. Vincent & the Grenadines for making it through to stage two and wish all four teams the very best of luck this week,” he continued.
Digicel Trinidad & Tobago CEO, Niall Dorrian, said; “We are looking forward to some exciting football here in Trinidad & Tobago and we expect this round to be a memorable one, not only with the performance of the teams, but with the initiatives Digicel will implement to increase crowd capacity.
“At the games themselves, there are a number of treats for spectators including entertainment from the Digicel cheerleaders and Digicel Brand Ambassador, Ravi B. I would also like to echo President Warner’s sentiments and wish all the teams’ good luck,” he continued.
Play is set for the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium from 17:00hrs today with Guyana against Haiti.
Trinidad & Tobago oppose St. Vincent & the Grenadines from 19:30.
