In two keen contests decided on penalty kicks, Fruta Conquerors and Western Tigers FC triumphed over BV Triumph United and Santos FC, respectively to set up a highly anticipated thriller between the two teams to culminate the 3rd Annual Mackeson Stout/Digicel Sweet 16 football championships at the Plaisance Community Centre, Thursday evening.
In the first encounter the ‘Tigers’ battled valiantly but just could not get on top of their opponents who played a determined game to deny the pre match favourites right down to regulation time.
The Conquerors could count themselves lucky after Shawn Daniels flunked a penalty in the 70th minute that might have been decisive in favour of the Betterverwagting team.
The miss ensured that the two teams battled into extra time. When this segment failed to separate the two teams, they became embroiled in a penalty shootout.
After a competitive rally up to the fourth round of kicks where both teams managed to pierce each other’s goal, Conqueror’s goalie, Oswald Cornette, was the unsung hero after he managed to block a crucial attempt by the opposition, catapulting his team into the finals.
The feature attraction between the ‘Tigers’ and Santos FC was played at a furious pace in the first half as both teams sought the initiative.
This segment was characterized by near misses and blatant blunders none more glaring than a disallowed goal for the former team after the referee ruled that the goal came after the Santos custodian was fouled.
Thereafter, the battle for honours intensified but neither side could find the magic to surge ahead sending the game into extra time and subsequently, penalty kicks where Western Tigers prevailed.
Thursday’s matches should provide heated action as both teams attempt to lay claim to the prestigious prize at stake.
