Five employees of DIDCO are currently patients at the Balwant Singh Medical Centre after an elevator that was transporting them to the hatchery collapsed and crashed to the floor.
The hatchery is located on the third floor of a building in the company’s compound at Ramp Road, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Twelve people, among them two boys, were entrusted with transporting eggs to the hatchery.
An eyewitness said that the elevator had just left the hatchery when a support snapped and the elevator came crashing down, tossing one of the women out of the system. She is suspected to have sustained a fractured pelvis. The two boys sustained broken legs.
The others sustained their injuries when the elevator slammed into the ground below. All were rushed to the hospital where seven were treated and later sent home.
This is the second time that the elevator collapsed this year. Officials of the company were not immediately available for comment.
