GCUC proud of Umpire’s achievements

At age 40, Guyanese Nigel Duguid is considered a very young man in his field and is already one of the best Cricket Umpires in the West Indies.
Duguid, who turns 41 on November 25, made his Regional One-Day debut last month in the senior West Indies 50-overs tournament and along with fellow Guyanese Clyde Duncan stood in the semi-final between Jamaica and Barbados at Sabina Park.
In a tournament marred by sub-standard batsmanship and generally ordinary Umpiring standards, Duguid was outstanding and showed little signs of nerves.
The father of three, including 19-year-old twin girls, Duguid has been rewarded by his competent work in Jamaica with selection for the three ‘A’ team ODIs between West Indies and Pakistan on 9, 11 & 14 in Grenada and the four-day ‘Test’ at Arnos Vale in St Vincent from November 18-21.
At a time when Eddy Nicholas is no longer on the International panel and the experienced Duncan is on his way out, Duguid carries Guyana’s hopes of producing another Test Umpire.
Duguid and Shannon Crawford have been regarded as Guyana’s best two ‘young’ Umpires for the last 5 years and Duguid’s elevation to ‘International’ level must be encouragement to former players to get involved in Umpiring in their 30s in Guyana.
Duguid, who represented GCC as a left-arm spinner up to 1995 when he turned his attention to Umpiring, told Kaieteur Sports yesterday that he was surprised at his call up since it was something he did not expect.
“When I was selected for the Regional tournament, Mr Duncan told me to be my normal self, imagine it was a local game, stay focused and calm and give of my best. I tried to do those things and having him with me on the field in the semi-finals was a good feeling,” Duguid informed “After I stopped playing in 1995, the late Mr Compton Vyphuis asked me to come into Umpiring. I wasn’t doing anything then and at age 25 I decided to go into it. With the knowledge of playing the game for GCC, it wasn’t too difficult for me,” Duguid explained.
Yesterday Grantley Culbard, the Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Cricket Umpires Council (GCUC) said that the Council is proud of Duguid’s achievements so far.
“Over recent years this young Umpire consistently impressed in local competitions and many of his colleagues felt that he was good enough to reach the very top in the Umpiring World and should not be kept back” Culbard informed.
The GCUC said that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) heard of Duguid and selected him for the Regional tournament and were impressed enough to pick him for the semi-finals is worthy of praise.
The WICB has a new policy to focus on young, good Umpires and in addition to Duguid the Trinidadian pair of Peter Nero and Joel Wilson and Gregory Braithwaite of Barbados were also given Regional senior debuts in Jamaica last month.
The GCUC congratulates Duguid on his most recent appointment and wishes him the best as he continues to do what he has been doing constantly in the field of Cricket Umpiring and feels he has all that is required to reach the top.
