West Indies ODI player Royston Crandon took 4-34 to bowl Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets (RHTG&G) to an exciting 12-run victory over Young Warriors in last Sunday’s final of the 2010 Busta Champion of Champions tournament at the Area ‘H’ ground in Rose Hall Town, Berbice.
A large crowd saw RHTG&G claim the last 8 Young Warriors wickets for 54 runs as the visitors, replying to RHTG&G’s 203-9 off 46 overs, dismissed for 192 from 44.3 overs, giving the home team their 6th Busta title from seven competitions.
Electing to bat on a pitch with preparation moisture, RHTG&G lost Delbert Hicks (6) at 15-1 when he was caught behind off left-arm-pacer Devindra Ramoutar. Renwick Batson and national Under-19 player Dominic Rickie added 28 before Rickie (5) was removed by pacer Ameer Rahaman.
Batson and Jason Sinclair added 40 before Batson (40) fell to spinner Balram Samaroo at 55-2 while Young Warriors struck a crucial blow when Royston Crandon (7) was bowled by Kevin Ramdeen 96-4.
Left-arm-spinner Anil Beharry removed Eon Hooper (2) at 107-5 but Sinclair (49), Ravi Narine (26), Esuan Crandon (23) and Shawn Perreira (16*) all contributed for the defending champions towards the end of their innings as Gajanand Singh, one of the few players to represent both Berbice and Demerara, took 4-48 runs.
Young Warriors began their reply horrendously when National opener Richard Ramdeen was run out for a duck. Maxie De Jonge and Seon Hetmyer added 65 for the 2nd wicket before De Jonge (47) was caught off left-arm-spinner Ravi Narine.
Singh and Hetmyer featured in a 3rd wicket partnership of 72 before off-spinner Troy Mathieson trapped Singh LBW for 35 at 137-3. Singh’s older brother Ishwar (2) was then brilliantly stumped by Hicks off Royston Crandon at 141-4.
Royston Crandon removed Samaroo (2) at 154-5 and Beharry joined Hetmyer with their team requiring 50 runs off 7 overs. The left-handed Beharry (10) smashed Crandon for a massive six before he was bowled by Troy Mathieson in the 42nd over at 179-6.
Royston Crandon bowled Kevin Ramdeen (2) and Devindra Ramoutar (0) was run out at 185-8 to leave the match on a knife’s edge. Hetmyer, who scored 64 with 2 fours and 2 sixes, was brilliantly caught by Hooper on the mid-wicket boundary off Mathieson at 186-9.
The last pair of Shimron Hetmyer and Ameer Rahaman needed to score 18 runs off 12 balls but thirteen year-old Hetmyer, after hitting a six, was stumped off Royston Crandon to spark wild celebrations among the home team’s supporters. Mathieson supported with 3 for 26 for the winners.
At the presentation ceremony, Hilbert Foster, Secretary/CEO of Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, hailed the tournament a success and rated the final as the best in the competition’s history.
Foster expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their confidence in the organizational skills of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club while General Manager of Guyana Beverage Company, Robert Selman praised both teams for producing a competitive final.
He said his company’s investment was well used and described the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club as a ‘role model’ organisation before announcing that the 2011 tournament would be bigger and better.
Selman praised Hetmyer, an employee of the company, for his brilliant innings and expressed confidence that he would develop into a senior Guyana player.
RHTG&G received the Busta Trophy and $80,000 while Young Warriors collected the Runner-up Trophy and $40,000.
Hetmyer, the Man-of-the- Final, also collected the ‘Best batsman’ prize while Royston Crandon collected the ‘Best bowler’ prize.
The victory was dedicated to Ravi Mangar and the staff of Gizmos & Gadgets.
