As Month of the Elderly swiftly approached its end, the Palms, in collaboration with Cyril Potter College of Education, Kuru Kururu Training Centre and President’s Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG) on Thursday last, hosted a concert for the residents of the institution.
And one day later, the Palms commissioned a recreation facility to the benefit of all mobile residents of the Palms and other geriatric facilities of this kind across Georgetown.
The concert showcased a wide range of performing arts including singing, drama and dancing.
The programme was chaired by Miranda Austin, drama instructor, who captured the attention of the elderly with her humorous remarks and allusions to elderly teachings and ideologies.
According to Johnette Chase, a teacher from CPCE, the supporting members of the college are happy to be associated with the elderly persons from the home. She said that aside from their participation in the concert, they have also been visiting the Palms on a regular basis and planting flowers to enhance the physical environment.
According to Govind Singh, Administrator of the Palms, he is well aware that the hardest thing to do in life is nothing, and so the administrative team at the Palms has been and continues to work hard to ensure that the elderly residents can enjoy their golden years.
This gives reason to all the activities that the institution has been hosting for the past month.
He added that the Palms is trying to erase the myth which suggests that life at the institution is just “come and die” instead “we are like a family”.
When asked about the improvements made to the institution over the past year, Singh said that the facility has been equipped with a new minibus, an industrial washing machine, gym equipment, television and other recreational instruments all government allocation.
However, the highlighted improvement is the new wing of the Palms, which is specifically for recreational benefits of residents.
Singh added that the involvement of public-spirited citizens is very much needed. In that non- Governmental organisations will be welcomed to “come and interact”.
