A mangrove secretariat has been constructed and is staffed by four officers. Two mangrove community rangers have been employed and are monitoring the newly replanted areas from Hope Beach to Triumph.
The Mangrove Action Committee is collaborating closely with the Guyana Forestry Commission and the Work Services Group (WSG) which is responsible for Sea Defence.
The WSG which has responsibilities for monitoring the manmade concrete sea walls is also providing training for the mangrove community rangers who are responsible for monitoring the mangrove forests along the coast which are natural sea defence.
Mangrove forests in Guyana are the first line of defence against many of the effects of climate change and climate related extreme events such as the present weather watch as a result of Tropical storm, Tomas.
The underlying drivers of mangrove degradation are similar in nature even where specifics vary. In the light of importance of mangrove ecosystems for their importance as natural insurance against climate change the Government of Guyana and the European Union has developed the Guyana Mangrove Restoration Project.
The overall objective of the programme is to abate climate change and to mitigate its effects via sea defences.
The project includes protection, rehabilitation and sustainable use of mangroves.
The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) has identified the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI) as the lead agency and a Mangrove Action Committee is overseeing the project.
