The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) through its engagement with the business community, saw hundreds of stakeholders during its interactions during the latter part of last month in Regions Two and Three.
According to the ERC, it was during these engagements that the Business Community in both regions pledged its support to work with the ERC to create a more cohesive, tolerant and respectful society.
The first meeting was held on October 26, with owners of businesses in Region Two at the State House in Anna Regina, while the meeting for members of the business community in Region Three was held on October 28, 2010 at the Aracari Resort, Plantation Versailles, West Bank Demerara.
During these meetings, several issues including the state of ethnic relations in the regions were discussed. The stakeholders also committed to ensuring that everyone will benefit equally from the distribution of services/commodities offered by their businesses.
The ERC disclosed that the issue of ensuring a peaceful environment for the upcoming 2011 National and Regional Elections was also discussed and the participants assured the Commission that they will do everything possible to assist in the process for peaceful elections.
Participants at the Meeting at Aracari Resort urged the ERC to continue its work. They asked that the Commission engage more people, including key persons in society.
The participants were told of the planned ERC one-day Private Sector Conference which is billed for the Princess International Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara on Thursday, November 18, 2010. This Conference will be held under the theme “Promoting the development of harmonious relations between ethnic groups and removing barriers to participation; ensuring equal opportunities and access for all”.
This will be a gathering of Chairpersons of Boards, Managing Directors, Chief Executive Officers, Chief Financial Officers, Human Resources Managers/Directors and the Sole Proprietors/Owners.
In the Regions visited, Public Education and Awareness Activities (Film Festivals) were conducted with a total of approximately 900 students from the following schools; Good Hope Primary School, Aurora Primary School, Huist Dieren Primary School, Taymouth Manor Primary School, CV Nunes Primary School, Sparta Primary School, Hampton Court Primary, Wakapau Primary School ( Lower Pomeroon), Kabakaburi Primary School (Upper Pomeroon), Parika Salem Community High School, Vergenoegen Secondary School, Patentia Secondary School, L’ Aventure Secondary School, Maryville Primary School (Leguan), Leguan Secondary School, Essequibo Islands Secondary School (Wakenaam) and Arthurville Primary School (Wakenaam).
Commissioners visited the following communities Kabakaburi Village, Upper Pomeroon, Wakapau Village, Lower Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenaam where Community Meetings were held and several issues were identified by the residents. The Commission promised to follow-up on some of the issues raised.
The Regional visits have been an annual programme of the ERC to sensitise individuals to the need for tolerance and respect for all races and discussing how they can contribute to the fostering of racial harmony in their communities and ultimately Guyana.
