Assailant remains in police custody, one victim still hospitalised
Charlestown killing…
William Lyte, called “Brother Lyte” or “Booy”, who went berserk on Tuesday last killing two persons and wounding two others, remains in police custody.
Up to press time yesterday, the man was still being held by the police. When contacted last evening, no one could say whether Lyte would be charged. This newspaper was last told that the police were awaiting the post mortem results, after which advice would have been sought from the Director of Public Prosecution.
However, what is clear is that the man has been in police custody well beyond his stipulated 72 hours of detention without any charge.
On Tuesday morning last, “Brother Lyte” went on a rampage, chopping four persons in a savage attack, which left two dead and two injured, and a community reeling.
Those killed are 38-year-old Ann Cham-a-Koon, of 60 Russell Street, and 75-year-old Cedric Blackman, of 57 Russell and Howes Streets.
The two injured persons are Radesh Persaud, 41, of 66 Russell Street and Shawn De Souza, also 41, of 58 Howes Street.
Only one of the injured, De Souza is still being treated for his injuries at a city hospital. Blackman was the first to be attacked as he was chopped while sitting in his living room. Cham-a-Koon was chopped after she ventured out onto the road to see the commotion despite warnings by her relatives. The other two men were attacked while walking along Howes Street.

Shawn De Souza is in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He was chopped on the shoulder and neck.
Yesterday, he told Kaieteur News that on the day he was chopped, he was at home on his cell phone, but his phone ran out of credit, so he decided to go to the shop to get some “top up”.
He was on his way to the shop when he saw “Brother Lyte” approaching him. He said that as customary, he greeted him, but in return, the man took out a cutlass and started chopping him.
“Everything happen in a flash. I couldn’t ketch mi self,” said De Souza.
He said that he fell to the ground, but managed to get up and started running. However, Brother Lyte ran behind him and continued to chop at him. He stated that he was rescued by public spirited citizens.
Subsequently he was taken to the hospital.
He added that he saw no “red light” or indications that the man had just committed a murder, since there were no alerts from persons from the neighbourhood or blood stains on his clothes.
De Souza noted that he has been living in the Charlestown community for almost three years and “Brother Lyte” never appeared to him as “mentally disturbed”.
