– Squires, Humphrey defending Open champions
The Pegasus Open Tennis Championships is expected to begin tomorrow at the entity’s Hardcourts and according to a release the event will coincide with the Hotel’s 41st anniversary celebrations.
The Open is a prestigious event on the GLTA calendar and attracts the best of local talent in the Junior and Senior categories.
Keen competition is expected as defending champions Phillip Squires and Carol Humphrey will need to be at their best to hold off rising stars Jeremy Miller and Krystal Sukra in the Open categories.
The Men’s Doubles will have several good pairs such as Jeremy Miller/Jason Andrews and Leyland Leacock/Gilbert Barckoy and they will be hoping to create upsets and take home the trophy from last year’s winning combination of Phillip Squires/Godfrey Lowden.
Former top doubles player Andre Lopes, who teams up with Sandeep Chand and they are expected to provide stiff competition, along with the pairs of Ezra Sue-Ho and Andy Gouveia and junior players Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes.
This category should provide some exciting tennis and fans are being urged to come out and witness what is anticipated top be a top level tournament.
Old rivalries will be renewed in the senior categories as Steve Surujbally, Omar Persaud, Maxie Fox and Bobby Khan test their skills in the Over 55 Doubles.
Veteran player Godfrey Lowden and Omar Persaud are the top seeds in the Over 45 Doubles and are the hot favourites to take home the title.
Sanjeev Datadin and Don Singh are the top seeds in the Men’s Over 35 Doubles where they can expect keen tussles with the likes of Gilbert Barkoy/Julian Mc Ewan, Omar Persaud/Godfrey Lowden and the Berbician team of Anthony Ameerally and Mario Niamatali
In the Boy’s 18 top seeds Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes are again expected to contest for the title as are Krystal Sukra and Aruna Ramrattan in the Girls 18 & Under.
The tournament will have 15 categories and run from November 1-20.
Adult Categories will be played daily from 17:00 hrs- 22:00 hrs
Junior Categories will be played mostly on weekends from 08:00 hrs-16:00 hrs.
The draws and fixtures are posted at the Pegasus Courts and players are reminded to check for their scheduled matches.
