The day has finally arrived and its Rodeo time again and the Place to be is the Rising Sun Turf Club, Arima Park, West Coast Berbice, where the Rising Sun Rodeo Committee brings off a grand one day action packed event.
All the Vaqueros and other participants from overseas and others from the far flung areas of Guyana have all arrived for what is expected to be a wild day of Action on the Coast. Over the past week the organisers used the opportunity to formalized preparations and made sure every system is in place. The venue was also tested with a few trial runs using mostly local cowboys and according to organiser and President of The Rising Sun Rodeo Committee Inshanally Habibulla, every thing worked perfectly.
With more accommodation now in place with the construction of the new Grand Stand, Patrons will be able to view the activity in absolute comfort.
The number of participants has increased significantly with them overseas contingent from Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela along with those from the far flung areas including Lethem, the Rupununi Savannahs and the Corentyne River being involved in exercises on the Rising Sun Turf during Saturday.
The West Berbice Posse which makes up the bulk of the local brigade which is made up of horse men and women from the Abary, Mahaica and Mahaicony River area was also in action at the venue.
With over 10 different activities in various categories slated to be staged and over $1M dollars in prizes including cash, trophies on offer, it is slated to be the biggest activity of its kind to be held on the coast.
Among the activities listed to be held are steer roping, bare back bronco for males and females. Male and female barrel race, wild cow milking, calf roping, wild bull riding, Saddle bronco and the popular Banks DIH ‘Banks Beer’ Tug o War events, with the winning team set to receive a few cases of Banks beer. A number of novelty events including activities for kids and visitors will also be held during the day, as the organisers strive to get every one involved.
Another feature event on the day’s card is the crowning of the Rodeo King and Queen competition. The Reigning Queen is Ranyela Nascimento and she is set to defend her title. Action is set to kick off at 11:00 hrs with the various winners and other outstanding performers being presented with monetary incentive, trophies and other attractive prizes at the conclusion.
Pacesetters Banks DIH Limited is leading the way with a sponsorship deal close to $1M and according to Special Events and outdoor manager Mortimer Stewart it is an activity that the company is pleased and willing to get involved in.
According to Habibulla “It will be a day full of fun and frolic” and he is urging patrons to come in their numbers and come early, because the event will start on time.
Habibulla told Kaieteur sport that the idea of bringing the event to the coast will help those who are interested in the sport and have never seen the activity and are unable to travel to the interior to be able to see what a rodeo is like and participate in the fun filled and trilling events.
