Dear Editor,
I see that there is a big deal going in this country about Government giving thousands of laptops. I am sure that this exercise will cost the Government of Guyana millions upon millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, all of this is happening, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and its ability to investigate a crime is suffering. There is no modern forensic lab. If the police need to check samples for DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) they would have to send the samples to another country for testing. It’s not only DNA testing the police have to send samples to other countries for, it’s other tests too. Imagine the possibilities if we had one of these labs in Guyana.
The other thing is at the University of Guyana (UG) has no courses in criminology (scientific study of crime, criminals, criminal behaviour and corrections).
I am no expert but to me an ordinary Guyanese, it would seem that if these things are implemented, maybe just maybe, we might have better investigators in and out of the police force. Only if this course was introduced at UG’s and offered to both civilians and of course police officers. Imagine the career possibilities for us here in Guyana.
Mr. Editor, the point of this letter is instead of Government spending millions upon millions of dollars on laptops.
Why not take that same money and do something that will actually benefit the country, thus helping the country to fight crime in an efficient, effective and more professional manner. For those who can’t see it. I feel sorry.
