– businessman wounded
A Stabroek Market businessman shot a bandit dead shortly after 21:00 hrs last night but was himself wounded during a confrontation with the robber and two other armed men who had attempted to invade the victim’s Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara home.
Residents said that the robber was slain during a shootout between the businessman, Ryan Boodhoo, and the robber’s accomplices.
However, Boodhoo, of Lot 66 Blakenburg Housing Scheme, was shot in the left thigh and was being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation up to late last night.
The other two robbers fled the scene, but police recovered a white Toyota Carina, PJJ 1849, that the suspects were reportedly driving.
Sources from the area said that the slain bandit is a deportee, and a well-known carjacker from Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that Boodhoo, his wife and small daughter had attended a religious ceremony earlier in the night.
They returned shortly after 21:00 hrs. and when Boodhoo was about to open his gate, he saw a man standing in the front of his yard.
A source said that when the businessman began to enquire about his presence in his yard, the intruder pretended to be drunk.
Boodhoo reportedly then drew a licensed firearm and approached to the intruder.
He failed to see two other men hiding in the yard, and reportedly only became aware of their presence after one of them shot at him.
The businessman returned fire, fatally wounding the first man he confronted. By this time the man was attempting to escape.
The man’s accomplices reportedly scaled the fence and fled in the direction of the seawall.
The sound of gunshots alerted Boodhoo’s neighbours who later rushed to the scene.
Some of them observed that the dead man had a car key attached to one of his fingers.
They then recalled that three strange men had parked a white car near to Bay View Restaurant and Bar. They had then bought a Malta and a Guinness at the bar and then left.
The residents and police then went to area where the car was parked. Police used the key that was found on the slain man to open the door of the vehicle.
Kaieteur News understands that the vehicle is registered to a woman who resides in Georgetown.
It has been taken in police custody while the slain gunman’s body was removed to the mortuary at West Bank Demerara.
