As part of Agriculture Month, GuySuCo held an open day at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) estates, for students from a number of schools. These students participated in interactive discussions with research officials on Thursday.
Some of the schools were Unity/Lancaster Secondary, BV Secondary, Bladen Hall Multilateral, President’s College, Soesdyke Secondary, Golden Grove Secondary, Covent Garden Secondary, Friendship Secondary and Diamond Secondary. According to Maxine Cummings, Manager of the Breeding and selection Department of the Agriculture Research centre, school children from grades ten and eleven of region four were given the opportunity to tour the facility as part Agriculture Month 2010.
She said the various research departments would be opened for the day for student to have an insight of the working of GuySuCo.
According to Communications Officer of Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc, Mahendra Roopnarine, several agriculture practices in GuySuCo can be directly attributed to the contribution of research, some of these the students learnt about the commencement of the Demerara Breeding Programme (1900), the adoption of mineral fertilizers in sugarcane nutrition (1930), introduction of maturity sampling for harvest planning (1953) and development of fully integrated management practices for rodent and insects, among others.
He said that the students were given the opportunity to learn and interact with various departments where they were enlightened about the research field of GuySuCo.
