Even as the observance of October as the Month of the Elderly comes to an end, a relatively new foundation is taking active steps to ensure that the elderly in Guyana maintain their quality of life and their dignity.
The Godwin McPherson Foundation is launching the Guyana Association of Retired Persons (GARP) tomorrow evening, at 19:30 hrs.
The local Association has been patterned after the Barbados Association of Retired Persons, which was established in 1995. The main aim of this body is to improve the quality of life of its members and of all older persons on that island.
Membership is open to persons resident in the country who have reached the age of 50.
They will benefit from discounts from several businesses – including supermarkets, hardware, dry goods, department and other stores, restaurants and health services.
The members have found the Association’s benefits and discount scheme extremely helpful, saving them significant amounts each month.
It is with the intention of securing similar benefits for a Guyanese elderly that the Guyana Association of Retired Persons is being launched on Sunday evening at the Water Chris complex in Georgetown.
The launch is part of a series of activities planned by the Godwin McPherson Foundation to mark its first anniversary. Demonstrating its interest across the entire age spectrum, the Foundation’s activities begin with a Youth Explosion on Saturday, October 30 in the auditorium of the Critchlow Labour College.
Youths from communities across Guyana will be discussing very frankly the various issues in their communities and sharing views on the way forward for Guyana.
On Sunday morning, members of the Foundation will seek God’s guidance when they attend a service at the St. Augustine’s Anglican Church at Friendship, East Coast Demerara.
The Foundation, with international management consultant, Dr. Aubrey Armstrong as President, is made up of former colleagues of the late Army Officer and other community minded activists who committed themselves shortly after his death last year to carrying out the work he had started in rural Guyana, especially among the depressed communities.
General Secretary of the Foundation is former Chief of Staff, Brigadier Eddie Collins, while former Army Officer and Attorney, Mr. Joe Harmon is coordinator for the launch of the Guyana Association of Retired Persons.
