… Agri Month celebrations
Chief Hydromet Officer of the country’s Hydrometeorological Services, Bkaleka Seulall, was yesterday honoured for being the youngest head ever of that government department.
Seulall was among several employees of the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies who were honoured yesterday as part of Agriculture Month 2010.
Among them were long-serving staffers.
The event held at the National Cultural Centre also saw Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, being honoured for his role in revitalizing the industry.
According to Persaud, the agricultural sector is undergoing numerous changes with an estimated 65 new staffers joining the Ministry every year.
He lauded the workers for working under severe pressure that saw many of them out in the fields on the weekends.
The past three years have also seen a greater mix of the demographics with new departments being introduced. These have, in turn, led to a demand in a new breed of staffers skilled in different areas, the Minister told the gathering.
Including those who honoured yesterday were staffers of the Guyana Forestry Commission, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority and the National Agriculture Research Institute.
The Minister stressed that while the event was an annual one, the reality is the staffers are the one who needs to be recognized.
On the lighter side, he asked the staffers not to think him “bad” because of being pushed to work overtime or even “doubletime”. This was only because the country expects results.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dindyal Permaul, in addressing the staffers, acknowledged that many of the jobs are hazardous in nature, forcing the Ministry to now ensuring that newcomers understanding the dangers fully from their job descriptions which have been amended.
Permaul drew reference to the 2005 flood where emergency staffers braved the flood waters and used medications to bring help to the disaster areas.
