– Hikers lead 1st Div.
GCC Spartans pulled off a surprise upset victory over Hikers when newcomer Samantha Fernandes made a steal off an errant defensive pass to score the lone goal of the match.
The evenly contested battle saw the young, fit Spartans showing maturity beyond their years in their composed build-ups, while the quick counter-attacking Hikers were just as threatening.
It took all of the first half and seven minutes of the second for the Spartans to secure the win and remain in contention for a place in the finals.
The Hikers 1st division men continued their domination of the competition with a handy 10 – 6 victory over Old Fort.
Robert France was on fire for the Hikers, scoring 5 goals for the victors and he was supported by a double from Randy Hope and singles by Colonel ‘Scooby’ Heywood, Devin Munroe and Jerry Bell.
John Abrahams led the score sheet for Old Fort with a hat-trick, and Richard Heyliger scored a double, while Chris Low Koan added the other.
The men’s second division competition saw Hikers defeat Police 4-2. Akeem Thompson netted a double for the victors, while Randy Hope and Aroydy Branford scored one each. Dwight McCalman and Ronford Liverpool each scored for the Police.
The GCC second division side made a meal of Old Fort with seven unanswered goals. Andrew Xavier led the scorers with a hat-trick, Trevon Smith netted a double and singles came from Stuart Gonsalves and Stephen Xavier.
The lone under 19 match of the evening saw Hikers demolish Old Fort 8-1. Yonnick Peters registered four goals for Hikers, while Ryan Primo scored a double and Aroydy Brandford and Kevin Edwards scored singles.
Christopher Swami scored the lone goal for Old Fort in the brave attempt by the newcomers.
The Hikers lead the men’s first division table at the end of the first round with 6 points followed by Old Fort and GCC each with 1 point.
The GCC Tigers lead the ladies competition with 6 points at the end of the first round followed by the GCC Spartans on 3 and the Hikers yet to score.
The men’s second division finds the Hikers on top with 6 points, GCC with 4, Police and Old Fort tied on 3 and the Dragons with 1 point.
The under-19 competition finds the Hikers with 6 points while GCC and Old Fort share the cellar with zero.
GCC and Old Fort veterans each have 3 points, while Hikers are yet to score.
Matches continue last evening and Saturday with the finals billed for Sunday evening from 16:00hrs.
