Letitia Myles completed her astonishing recovery from a career-threatening injury when she won the ultimate test against one of Guyana’s best junior athletes. Myles thrashed Tiffany Carto twice yesterday at the South Georgetown Inter-Zone Championships.
Carto, who represented Guyana this year at the Inter-Guiana and CARIFTA Games, was positive ahead of the National Schools’ Championships before Myles entered the picture and spoilt her dreams at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary yesterday.
After losing to Carto in the 100 metre earlier, Myles returned to dish out back-to-back whippings in the 400m and 200m events, which forced Carto into tears. Myles denied Carto from contesting more than one individual event in the Girls’ Under-16 category at the National Championships.
In the last showdown between them, the 200m, Carto surged off the turn and took a slight lead at about the 150m mark, however, Myles bottom-end strength, which had earlier proved superior in the 400m, powered her past Carto in the last 10m for the win.
At the end, Myles’ time was 25.05, which will definitely prove challenging for competitors at the nation-wide competition at the National Stadium, November 9-12. Carto had 26.0 for second and Elesha Griffith had 28.2 seconds for third place in the race.
