Boxing buffs are in for an added treat when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s ProAm boxing extravaganza gets underway the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) tomorrow evening. Shawn Cox, the heavyweight pugilist that had tamed Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes will once again comprise a part of the ProAm boxing extravaganza when he arrives in Guyana sometime today to tackle Kurt Best.
Best has been involved in a slugfest with Anthony Augustin and had held his own despite obvious ring rust. He has had enough time to prepare and is bristling with confidence for this bout. The Bajan is expected in Guyana with his manager/trainer, Sam Layne sometime today. Also expected in today is Revlon Lake for his fight against Mark Austin.
Meanwhile, Trinidadian Leann Boodram is also expected in the country sometime today to keep her ring date with Mandessa Moses in a bout that is expected to be action packed. Moses was initially scheduled to clash with Wendy Allen, a Barbadian fighter that has notched up a victory over her in her debut bout. Since then the Guyanese pugilist has improved tremendously, defeating all who dared to oppose her.
She was eagerly looking forward to the clash with Allen to erase the only blemish to her fledgling career. This was not to be, however, and Moses will now have to settle for a bout with the Trinidadian who has a strong boxing lineage.
The Boodram family is well known in Trinidad for their boxing prowess as Ann Howard could attest when she was severely whipped by Leann’s sister when she fought in Siparia, Trinidad a few years ago.
Both foreign boxers would be engaged in light training sessions sometime this afternoon before attending the weigh in ceremony at the Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo Street, South Cummingsburg. The action is set to get underway at 20:00hrs tomorrow night.
