Guyana’s ‘Lady Jags’ arrived in Cancun Mexico yesterday ahead of the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifying tournament where the eight top teams in CONCACAF will face off for two automatic World Cup spots beginning tomorrow.
The Guyanese ladies participated in a successful Camp in Florida prior to travelling to Mexico where they will come up against the home team in their first game on Friday evening in the feature game. The other two teams in Group A, Trinidad and Tobago and Canada will compete in the first game on Friday.
Competition however begins tomorrow evening when the Group B teams go head to head. Three-time defending champions United States face Haiti in the feature game with opening play between Costa Rica and Guatemala.
Guyana’s second game is set for Sunday when they come up against Canada with their final group match set for Tuesday against Trinidad and Tobago.
Head of Delegation Colin Baker speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that the camp went very well in Florida and the Coaching staff is pleased with the level of fitness displayed by the ‘Lady Jags’.
He informed that they competed in two warm up games against the Under-18 Girls State Champions which the Jags won 1-0; the second game against a boy’s Under-18 team saw the Jags going down 5-6. Baker noted that the ladies showed great fitness and determination and it was good to see them scoring 5 goals against faster and stronger players.
“The team is very confident and high in spirit following the camp which commenced on the 22nd and ended on Monday last. These girls have done Guyana proud to date by becoming the first team to ever qualify for the Gold Cup and we need to give them our full backing in this penultimate stage before the World Cup finals. They are a committed bunch and we want to wish them all the best.”
Besides crowning the 8th CONCACAF women’s champion, the eight-team tournament will also see the top two teams qualifying directly for next year’s Women’s World Cup in Germany (June 26-July 17) while the 3rd place finisher will advance to a playoff against Europe’s 5th best team for a third berth.
This will be only the second time the CONCACAF women’s championship is being staged outside of the United States or Canada and first since the inaugural event in Haiti in 1991.
