– wins for Police, Tigers, Old Fort Vets
Hikers First Division men started the GT&T national indoor championships in typical fashion with a 4 – 2 victory over GCC on opening night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Captain Devin Munroe got the defending champs off to a flying start with his field goal just two minutes into the match setting GCC on their heels.
Robert France then added another four minutes later with one of his usual poacher’s goals to deceive GCC goalkeeper Michael Xavier. Kevin Spencer pulled one back for GCC in the 12th minute to take his side to the break, down 1-2 and still in contention.
The second half saw more good quality hockey from both sides, but Hikers gained further control of the match through a second from France four minutes into the half and Randy Hope put the score further out of reach by scoring the Hikers fourth in the 30th minute, before Spencer added his second two minutes from full-time, but it was not enough to overcome the powerful Hikers unit.
Earlier in the evening, GCC Tigers stamped their authority on the tournament in the ladies competition by cruising past GCC Spartans 2-0. Sisters Kerensa Fernandes and Sonia Jardine each scored one for the Tigers in the 8th and 34th minutes respectively.
The men’s second division competition seemed the most competitive of the evening as a resurgent Police team, back after a year’s absence from competition, pulled off a close 3-2 victory over Old Fort.
While the skilful Jason Dos Santos was first to score for the boys in red and white, the Police stormed back with three unanswered goals, a double from Dwight McCalman and one from Leroy Carroll. With Old Fort fighting to the wire, Tony Cole brought them back to within one in the final minute, but fell just shy of matching the lawmen who secured the win.
GCC ‘B’ and Western Dragons were locked in a dogfight in the other men’s second division fixture and despite four goals being scored, could not break their deadlock in the 40-minute match. Stuart Gonsalves and the promising Stephen Xavier scored two for the Bourda side, while a sterling performance from the Dragons’ Deon Carew saw him net a double for his side leaving the match drawn at 2-all.
In the lone veterans fixture, Old Fort outlasted Hikers 6-4.
Chris Low-Koan and Robert Hussein led the attack for Old Fort with a double apiece which was supported by one each from GT&T’s own Dexter Wyles and Ivor Thompson. Timothy Jonas and Brian Asregado put up a good fight for the Hikers by scoring two goals each in their losing effort.
Matches continued last night from 18:00hrs with the opening match of the Under-19 competition between the Hikers and GCC. The same two clubs follow in the veterans tie and the men’s second division. Old Fort then clash with the Western Dragons at 21:00hrs followed by the feature match being the men’s first division challenge between Old Fort and GCC.
The tournament runs all week except for Friday with the finals being played on Sunday 31st.
