“There has been no doubt that over the last three years that cricket has undergone a remarkable revolution and that the passion, commitment and discipline that was missing for so long has returned.”
This was the words of Berbice representative, Hilbert Foster, in his opening remarks when cricketers and administrators of the Berbice Cricket Board of Control convened at the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company’s Hadfield Street Sports Club to receive a one million dollars sponsorship package from Mr. Wystan Robinson on behalf of the telephone giants.
The package would be used to offset the necessary expenses of the cricket administrators of that region as they get ready to stage tournaments in the U-15, U-17 and U-19 categories. A part of the donation would be used to provide cricket balls to some of the less fortunate clubs in the community while the balance would be channeled into the organization of the identified tournaments.
Several top cricket officials from across the country attended the function including President of the Guyana Cricket Board, Chetram Singh, Marketing Consultant of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), Bish Panday, President (BCB), Keith Foster and Deputy General Manager (GT&T), Terry Holder, who is also the GCB Public Relations Official.
President of the BCB, Keith Foster extended gratitude to the sponsors while pointing out that the GT&T had always reached out to his organization in times of need. “This sponsorship package would go a far way in offsetting our expenses,” he assured Mr. Robertson.
Mr. Singh echoed Mr. Foster’s words while pointing out that the telephone company would be receiving five million dollars worth of sponsorship for their one million dollars input.
Mr. Panday also delivered brief remarks and joined the many voices in extending gratitude to GT&T. “Even though cricket has undergone some very traumatic times recently, it remains our premiere sport. It is, therefore, important that all of us as Guyanese continue to try our best to restore this noble game to where it rightfully belongs,” exhorted Mr. Panday. He further lauded the BCB for their display of commitment and dedication towards the development of the sport.
Several other speakers added their voices to the cause including President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), Roger Harper, President of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB), Bissoon Singh also spoke glowingly of the sponsorship saying that it would enhance cricket not only in the Ancient county but right across Guyana.
Meanwhile, Hilbert Foster, who had commenced the proceedings with a prayer, subsequently beseeched all present to issue hugs or handshakes as a gesture of their solidarity towards good relations in the administration of the sport while all and sundry pleaded for good sense to prevail in the administration of the sport at all levels.
