A 39-year-old gold miner was killed yesterday during a mishap at Mahdia.
Police have identified the victim as Randy Simon of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara.
According to one report, Simon was working in a pit with other miners when a section of it caved in on him. Another report said that he was in the pit when a tree fell on him.
His body has been transported to the Bartica Hospital mortuary.
Following a spate of similar deaths earlier this year, officials from the Geology and Mines Commission cautioned persons involved in small scale mining to put more safety measures in place at their locations.
