– If the 1985 friendlies were internationally recognised
Dear Editor,
Saturday October 23, 2010 the ‘King’ of Football turned 70. Pele won his first cap with the Brazilian national team on July 7, 1957 in a 2-1 defeat to old Rivals Argentina, he wasted no time opening his Brazilian account in the game to become the youngest player at 16 years nine months to score in International competition.
Twenty- eight years later November 1985 in Georgetown, Guyana, French Guiana senior national team visited the land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls to engage the host in two friendly internationals under lights at Camp Ayanganna, but instead of playing the senior national team, coach Lennox Arthur introduced the nation’s reserves mixed with veterans like Julian Moe, Trevor Maxwell, Adrian Forde, Neil Ochoa, Gerald Williams and Elson Hinckson.
Amongst the rookies, a kid born on the 28th of March 1969 named Deon Barnwell, who was on international debut. Barnwell sent Guyana ahead with a scorcher that started wild celebrations he was just 16 years 8 months old, one month less than the ‘King’.
And if the doubting Thomas’ taught his game one performance was beginners luck, he rocked the nets again in the second match the next evening. So at 16 years 8 months this Guyanese kid had two International goals, only FIFA or CONCACF can tell if Barnwell’s achievement is recognized internationally.
