A 30-year-old man charged with attempted murder was yesterday refused bail, when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Otis Fraser, of 119 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounded Sherwayne Grant, with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, on October 22, last.
The defendant, who was represented by attorney at law Basil Williams, was not required to plea, since it is an indictable charge.
The lawyer, in a bail application told the court, that his client has an unblemished record. Williams stated that his client was attacked by the virtual complainant (VC).
The defence attorney refuted the claims made by the prosecutor, who indicated that the VC is a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and is in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Police Prosecutor Lionel Harvey objected to bail on the grounds of the evidence against the defendant. He informed the court that on the day in question, at 15:30 hours, the defendant and the VC had an argument.
According to Harvey, the accused went to the police station to make a report of the incident. He said that when the man returned to the place where the incident occurred, the VC, who was armed with a knife, attacked him.
Harvey added that the accused picked up a brick and a scuffle ensued. He said the defendant took the knife away from the VC and stabbed him.
Fraser was remanded to prison and is scheduled to make his next court appearance tomorrow.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Mark Persaud, 30, who was charged with damage to property.
It is alleged that on Sunday, last, the defendant unlawfully and maliciously broke one glass window valued $180,000 – the property of Nalita Beepaul.
The defendant, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He made an application for bail. The man said that he felt an object hit him while passing, so he picked up a brick and threw it at the building.
Prosecutor Harvey had no objections to bail, but told the court that on the day in question, at 02:00 hours, Beepaul was standing in front of her property, when the defendant threw a brick and broke a glass window.
Harvey said that the woman called out to the accused, but the man ran away. Subsequently an arrest was made by the police.
The Magistrate granted bail to the tune of $75,000 and ordered the defendant to return to court on November 16.
