Recent Maternal Deaths… Jagdeo orders independent investigation

President Bharrat Jagdeo has ordered an independent investigation into the recent spate of maternal deaths at the New Amsterdam Hospital and has promised that should negligence found to be the cause, then those culpable will face the brunt of disciplinary action.
Jagdeo was at the time addressing media operatives and said that a strong message must be sent to those that go to work and laze around while persons under their care are in pain.
He said that the investigation will not be hidden, given that they will make the findings known emphasising that there shall be no cover up.
Jagdeo said that while there are genuine cases of persons dying as a result of complications in their pregnancy there are cases where persons die as a result of negligence.
He said that he ordered the investigation to ensure that the matter is not just looked over with just a blanket explanation or explained with technical jargons, which the layman would not understand.
Jagdeo said that the sector must not protect itself and must be open.
Berbice hospitals have been blamed for causing three maternal deaths within a matter of a month.
A 21-year-old mother, Yogita Bissham, of Number 60 Village Corentyne, Berbice was the most recent victim who died while delivering a baby girl at the Skeldon Hospital.
