Dear Editor,
People who do not understand American politics should avoid the subject completely.
In a letter by Phillip Bynoe: “All Guyana should pause and reflect on what this democracy is all about” (Kaieteur News October 21), Mr. Bynoe wrote, “It appears as though Barack Obama’s Democratic Party is set to lose control of probably both houses of congress, not because of what the democrats have done or have not done, but because of what many perceive to be an angry white backlash.
Many white Americans, including many democrats, cannot come to grips with the fact of a black president of the United States, and that is why for the first time in history a political party that has achieved so much legislatively and otherwise is afraid to run and campaign on those achievements solely because the leader of that party is a black man in a white America.”
Mr. Editor, the views expressed above by this writer is ludicrous; for if Barack Obama was as white as driven snow, his policies would have been rejected by the majority of Americans. The “angry white backlash” he will suffer on November 2nd, has absolutely nothing to do with him being a black man, but everything to do with his incompetence, radicalism and forcing a socialist agenda on the American people: Government-owned corporations, government-owned health care, redistribution of wealth, increased taxes, loss of jobs, and more social programmes.
Americans are concerned that his ultimate goal is to transform their capitalist society into a socialistic state. Under President Obama, the National Debt has grown to US$13.6 trillion (one trillion = one million million dollars), and is projected to rise to US$19.6 trillion by 2015 (source: US Treasury Department).
When President George W. Bush left office, the US National Debt was US$10.6 trillion, and that was considered to be ‘massive’. In less than two years in office, Obama has increased the deficit by US$3 trillion, which is more than the cumulative total of the national debt amassed by all US Presidents from George Washington through Ronald Reagan.
For Mr. Bynoe to suggest that “white Americans, including many democrats, cannot come to grips with the fact of a black president of the United States”, is wrong and racist; for Obama could not have been elected President without the white vote: 41% of white men and 56% of white women voted for him. If white Americans did not support him in preference to his white opponents, Barrack Obama may have gone back to being a community organiser in Chicago, listening to hate-filled sermons from his radical spiritual mentor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, declaring, “Not God bless America, God damn America”.
Barack Obama was given an opportunity to prove that he was capable…he’s failing miserably because he neither has the experience nor ability to be President of the greatest country God has ever made. Sadly, his performance does not match his campaign rhetoric of ‘hope and change’.
Bynoe is also wrong in believing that current Government programmes will “single-handedly transform Guyana’s economic base”, and cited the construction of a hydro-electric power generation facility; the implementation of a Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS); and Government’s aggressive push to ensure the harnessing and exploitation of our hydro-carbon resources, as reasons why all Guyanese should be supportive of the PPP/C Administration.
If Fip Motilall is ever able to complete the Amaila Falls access road for the Hydro Electric Project, Guyanese may never be able to afford the cost of electricity unless subsidized by Government. As it is, no one knows the true cost of this project, and the Government is determined to hide the details from the Guyanese people. Long term projects are good, but to quote an old saying, “while the grass is growing, the horse is starving.”
Guyanese need jobs and a livable income; they need good schools and hospitals, and to live in peace and harmony without fear of being robbed or molested or murdered. Guyanese need to be proud of themselves and their representatives, but there is neither transparency nor accountability in the Jagdeo Administration, and most of the projects being done by Government are sub-standard and overpriced.
Although I’m pleased that Guyana is benefiting financially from the LCDS programme, there is evidence of collusion among climatologists and manipulation of data to support the widely held view that climate change is caused by the actions of mankind. In fact, it is the view of many experts that climate change is a farce. But regardless, we still don’t know where the money we’re getting from Norway is going, and who is benefitting from it.
Mr. Bynoe will be best advised to read the empty promises made by Bharat Jagdeo in the 2006 PPP/C Manifesto, before throwing his support to a corrupted and secretive regime that continues to deny the passage of the Freedom of Information Act, and the Broadcast Legislation Bill.
If the PPP/C is so good for Guyana, why is the unemployment rate so high that so many young graduates are unable to get jobs? Why is the crime rate totally out of control, with so many unsolved murders? Why is Guyana now known as a major port for drug trafficking in the region? Why is there so much poverty in Guyana, with homelessness and children begging in the streets? Why is there so much corruption by the Jagdeo Administration with no transparency and accountability? And why does the PPP/C Government still continues to blame the PNC for all its failures after being in office for 19 years now? When will the PPP/C finally take responsibility for the deplorable state of the country?
In the coming months, the opposition parties will all have opportunities to present to the electorate, their plans for the economic development and security of this nation, and I pray that my fellow Guyanese will vote for issues and not race. But one thing is certain: Given the history of the PPP/C over the past 18 years, Guyana would be much better off under new leadership, for it would almost be impossible for another political party to replicate the destruction, humiliation and suffering endured by the Guyanese people under this current regime.
