A man who was caught with cocaine and marijuana was on Friday found guilty on two counts of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. He was sentenced to two years in jail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
The man, Shilander Persaud, 33, of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, was accused of being in possession of cocaine on October 31, 2008.
Prosecutor, Corporal Shurland King said that on the day in question, the police were on a mobile patrol along East Bank Berbice. At Edinburgh they stopped in the vicinity of Profit’s Shop where they noticed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.
They stopped and searched him and in his right side pocket they found two brown paper bags.
One bag contained what was suspected to be leaves, seeds and stems of marijuana, while the other bag was found to contain a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine.
In court, Attorney at law Charrandass Persaud begged the court to be lenient with his client stating “he is a sickly man” and was ill advised to use the drug for a chronic chest cold that he has. He said that his client also has a one-year-old child and is the only breadwinner in his family.
Corporal King in response stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a doubt. He stated that it was proven that the accused had possession, control and knowledge of the drug which was found in his pants pocket.
The Magistrate, before passing sentence stated that the prosecution witnesses were never discredited in any way. She then sentenced the man to one year in jail on both counts.
