Boxing Board President, Top promoter issues call for boxers’ return

Head of the People’s Syndicate Promotions Keith Bazilio has issued an impassioned plea to the boxers that have recently defected to the United States of America to return home before it is too late. He feels that there is still some time to repair the damage caused by their actions while the issue is in its embryonic stages.
Bazilio pointed out that the boxers were obviously misled by persons in the USA and should be given an opportunity to repair the damage caused by their irresponsible actions. “I believe that the act was disgraceful but these pugilists are not entirely at fault,” he said. The boxing promoter believes that the boxers were led to believe that defecting to America would have served as a bolster to their careers based on all of the rags to riches stories emanating from those parts. He said that even though less than two weeks have elapsed since the boxers have disappeared, they may be nurturing reservations of staying on especially since they would have realized the ill effects of their actions.
“I fully support Steve (Ninvalle) in the issuance of a ban but I do not believe that a lifetime ban is just; what are these guys going to do if boxing is taken away from them?” he wondered aloud.
He labeled the act by the boxers as selfish, while he complimented the GABA president on his stance to continue at the helm. “I’m happy he stayed on. He gave the boxers the hope that he will battle for their cause and even though there would be some apprehension in the camp, such support is very much needed,” Bazilio said.
The boxing promoter said that he would shudder to think of the effect the boxers’ action would have on their lives, “They are shutting down their lives,” he emphatically stated.
Despite the gloominess of the situation Bazilio feels that all is not lost. Towards this end he is calling on the administration of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) as well as all conscientious Guyanese to extend an olive branch to the trio, pleading with them to return home while issuing unreserved pardon to them.
Bazilio said that he is assured that the boxers were influenced by persons living in the USA even though there is no guarantee that those who influenced them would shoulder their burdens for any particular length of time. “The world is going through deep recession and the fact that these youths are not skilled in other areas spells doom for them in unfamiliar territory where help is not easily forthcoming,” opined Bazilio.
He pointed out that plans were in place to nurture them for participation at the 2012 Olympic Games in England and that alone should have encouraged them to return to the land of their birth. “What are they going to do in the USA in these hard times when there is a downturn in the American economy and no available jobs even for the Americans?” Bazilio wanted to know. He said that after perusing the issue he is strongly of the view that the boxers should return to Guyana. President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool was very reserved in his comments. He said that as the president of the professional arm of boxing he had taken an interest in the amateurs because he believes that molding the nursery is extremely important for the sustenance of the sport.
He said that the inclusion of the amateur pugilists on the ProAm boxing card was inspired by his belief that the boxers needed that kind of exposure if they were to succeed. “We want them to succeed and would not compromise their autonomy,” Mr. Abdool said in response to a suggestion that the hierarchy of the GBBC should also support the amateur association in their projections. He further opined that the buck stops at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. The three boxers, Clevon Rock, Dexter Jordon and Devon Boatswain disappeared while on the stopover leg of their journey from India after competing in the Commonwealth Games. While the executive of the GABA has not yet definitively outlined the sanctions to be issued out, President Steve Ninvalle has suggested a lifetime ban for the trio. Since the constitution only provides for a maximum term of one year for such indiscretions, the executives would have to huddle to enact constitutional amendments to effect this new statute.
