Stewart named MVP
The Guyana Hockey Board’s Youth initiative which started in early 2009 with the introduction of its schools coaching program, culminated last weekend at the National Gymnasium when close to 100 junior players turned up for its TRIX Schools and age group junior tournaments.
Four schools including, North Ruimveldt Multilateral, Queen’s College, Marian Academy and St. Stanislaus College were represented by eight teams, in what turned out to be a very competitive schools tournament. The teams were split into two groups of four and after the round robin phase of the competition it was Marian Academy ‘A’ who emerged as the top team from group X with St. Stanislaus College ‘A’ second, while St. Stanislaus College ‘B’ won group Y with North Ruimveldt Multilateral ‘A’ in second. In the semifinals, St. Stanislaus College ‘B’ got the better of their ‘A’ unit by a 4-0 margin through an excellent team performance where four of their five players scored. The other semifinal had to be decided by penalty shoot out after the game was tied at 1-1 after the full time.
In the penalty shootout, North Ruimveldt Multilateral A eventually got the better of Marian Academy ‘A’ by a 4-3 margin. In the final, young Hilton Chester scored all three of his team’s goals as St. Stanislaus College ‘B’ romped to a 3-0 victory over North Ruimveldt Multilateral ‘A’.
St. Stanislaus College ‘A’ then edged Marian Academy ‘A’ by a lone goal from Shamar Mittelholzer to capture third place. In the age categories players from all schools and clubs were split up into different teams to allow maximum participation by all.
The most entertaining category was the Under-13 where both boys and girls played together on mixed teams and it was the aptly named Super Mix team that dominated the competition, playing unbeaten in the round robin phase, before taking the final by a 3-1 margin over Wild Cats.
In the Under-16 and Under-21 categories, the boys and girls played separately in what turned out to be highly competitive matches.
In the Under-16 girls it was team Azul that got the better of their other colourfully named opponents Rojo and Negro. While on the Boys side Fearless showed that they were the team to be feared when they upset tournament favorites Space Patrol Delta 2-1 with goals coming from Shamar Mittelholzer and Mortimer Stewart for the champions, while Kevin Hamilton scored a consolation goal for the losers.
The Under-21 girls was the most evenly contested category, with only two points separating all four teams after the round robin phase. The final, however, was a blowout with the Red Necks’ Renee James scoring a hat trick to give her team the 3-0 victory over Avengers. The Under-21 boys final had to be decided by penalty shoot out after top teams Robin and Bulls played to a scoreless draw. Khalid Gajraj became the hero of his team when he scored the winning penalty to give his team a well deserved victory.
The first to third place teams in each category were awarded medals, while the most valuable players of each category were given new hockey sticks. Andrew Stewart of Hikers was given the unique honor of being named MVP for both the boys under 16 and 21 categories. The MVPs were chosen by the coaches of each category.
The Guyana Hockey Board will now turn its attention to the GT&T national indoor championships which is scheduled for next week, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, where some of these same players will be able to showcase their talents in the under 19 division.
