The 12-year-old boy who was with 17-month-old Rolandzo Hunte when he was struck in the head with a piece of wood by his grandmother has been taken into police custody.
This newspaper was told that the lad, who is disabled, was taken into police custody since Wednesday evening along with the dead child’s grandmother.
Initially, Rolandzo’s mother, Tiffany Tyrell, told this newspaper that on Sunday the 12-year-old came into their yard against her mother’s wishes. According to Tyrell she witnessed her mother pick up a piece of wood from a step and dealt a blow. Tyrell said that she did not see if anyone was hit but she noticed her son lying on the ground with a gaping wound to his head and bleeding profusely from the wound.
A post mortem performed yesterday revealed that the child died from a fractured skull and haemorrhage of the brain.
In a twist of events, this newspaper has been told that the 12-year-old was arrested and has not been allowed to communicate with his parents ever since. A close relative of the child said that the child is being asked to sign a document saying that he struck the baby, which is contrary to what transpired.
Up to press time yesterday the child was still in police custody as his relative were awaiting their lawyer’s assistance. Attorney at law Basil Williams, who is representing the interest of the child, upon visiting the Turkeyen Police Station last evening was told that he was not allowed to see the child.
According to Williams, the police are insisting that the child is in the Turkeyen lock-ups and that not even the lawyer can communicate with him. The police rank there said that the child was being held to facilitate investigations.
“They trying to pin this murder on this li’l boy. The baby mother (Tiffany Tyrell) know what happened and now she changing she story to save she mother,” one relative lamented.
The story was first brought to the attention of this newspaper by a relative of the dead child who was fearful that the matter will not engage the attention of the police. When the child was initially taken to the hospital it was never mentioned to hospital officials that the child was struck in the head.
Even after the child died on Tuesday the matter was not reported. It was not until a relative turned up at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary for the mortem done that the police got involved.
This newspaper was told that the relatives were hoping to get the post mortem done in a hurry but were instructed by mortuary official that the police had to be present. Some concerned relative also sought the assistance of this newspaper to draw the incident to the police attention. This was done and the subsequent police involvement.
