The much anticipated fifth annual Rockstone fish festival is set for next weekend, and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in collaboration with the Rockstone Tourism Association has promised that this would be better than the previous years.
The small fishing community of Rockstone, Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice) also recently held a workshop at the Arawana Lodge in three main areas: culinary arts (food handling) by Carnegie School of Home Economics Lecturer/Instructor, Ms. Joy-Ann Harry; Tour Guide training facilitated by Paul Waldron; and Customer Service training was done by GTA’s Deputy Director, Ms. Tameca Sukhdeo-Singh.
The small riverain village, which is located 18 miles west of Linden, was made popular after being featured in a 2003 National Geographic article headlined ‘Catfish Hunters’.
According to Minister of Tourism, Manniram Prasahd, over the years the Rockstone fish festival has evolved into a major event in the region ten communities, while it is also a hotspot for foreigners who love fishing.
He said that the community-based tourism has a direct impact on the surroundings, which promotes business and the fish festival; which also causes the small community with less than 400 persons to attract thousands of visitors.
According to the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of Rockstone fish festival, Lynette Benn, some of the activities include fishing expeditions, fish catching and cooking competitions and guided river tours.
In addition, the surrounding offers possibilities for bird watching, river safaris, nature walks and sport fishing, in addition nearby are the Golden Beach and Gluck Island which has a rich population of birds— at least 140 species.
It is a natural habitat for the giant otter, big river turtles, ‘Howler’ monkeys, labbas, iguanas, bush hogs, black caimans and is home to the National Flower, Victoria Amazonia.
The PRO further said that there will be a pot-pouri cultural presentation, eating competition, cycle race which will start at 18:00 hours on the Rockstone road, cooking competition, fish catching competition, boating competition, and “the prizes will be bigger and better.”
It was also disclosed that the parking and security will be enhanced for the event, and parking for pick-ups and 4×4 will be from $1,000, and cars $500, while camping space will be going at $3,500 per spot. However, no trucks will be allowed into the compound.
It was also mentioned that Gizmos and Gadgets would be giving 10% discount to patron who are shopping for fishing rods and other equipments for the festival.
