Having completed a clean sweep to cart off the honours in the first round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Suriname recently, the Golden Jaguars are once again getting ready for national duties in the second leg of the competition scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago early next month.
They will come up against the host country on November 4, two days after tackling Haiti on the 2nd. The local ball players would then oppose St Vincent and the Grenadines in a match scheduled for November 6.
This leg is expected to be tougher that the preceding one and the players are scheduled to return to practice sessions soon.
Consequently, the winner and runners-up will qualify for the finals competition scheduled for Martinique from November 26-December 5. The top four teams coming out of this tournament will then move on to battle in the semi final stage before the final two compete for the championships.
Yesterday morning, President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Colin Klass congratulated the footballers for their achievement even in the face of the many financial challenges the GFF is facing to make their participation a reality. Mr. Klass is making a spirited appeal to the corporate community for adequate support to help the ball weavers to accomplish their mission as they prepare for the next leg of the competition.
The GFF boss issued the call when he convened a press briefing at the GFF Section K Campbellville headquarters yesterday morning. Several other administrators and executive members were at the forum including General Secretary, Noel Adonis, Team Manager Rawle Adams, coach Wayne Dover and Organsising Secretary Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major.
Mr. Klass pointed out that while the FIFA subvention had offset some of the expenses, there was still need for a massive input from the business community and other stakeholders to realize the ultimate goal.
“There must be a collaborative effort of the corporate community and Government if we are to realize the amount necessary for the preparation of the team,” said Mr. Klass. He said that the relationship engendered with the Private Sector Commission a few years ago had not borne the type of fruit initially expected. Nevertheless, Mr. Klass remained staunch that Banks DIH has always been a friend of football and continues to offer substantial support to its programme.
Meanwhile, coach of the team, Wayne Dover feels that the recent accomplishment of the team was due to the high level of commitment and dedication exhibited by the local players. He pointed out that the local side was only able to engage in one practice match against a Trinidadian side before going into the just concluded competition. To this extent, he lauded the coaching staff as well officials of the GFF.
“Most of the training staff is new but they applied themselves to the task and must be applauded for their efforts,” said Dover. He further joined Mr. Klass in appealing for the corporate community to get on board for the rest of the championships.
Meanwhile, Klass revealed that the coaching staff would receive some technical assistance from Mr. Chino Hernandez Cerazo, a Puerto Rican that has arrived here to bolster the technical department.
