The country’s premier tertiary institution, the University of Guyana (UG), will celebrate 50 years in existence three years from now, and historians are being urged to draw on the experiences of its long-serving staffers to chronicle its rich history.
The call was made last evening as the university honoured 15 staffers who between them have served a total of 320 years at the institution.
Addressing several UG staffers and long service awardees at the Georgetown Club, Vice Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Carrington, expressed the notion that for any history to be recorded of the facility, both written and oral, it must be based on the legacy that is being forged by the staffers. Eleven of those individuals – from UG’s library, maintenance department, Bursary and Faculty of Health Sciences, among others – completed 20 years each.
Two more, including Cuba-born, Carmen Same-Acuna of the campus’ School of Education and Humanities, reached their 25th year while another two from the Maintenance Division have completed 30 years. According to the Professor, the staffers would serve as the cultural base that formed the very essence of UG and have shown “fortitude”, the theme for the evening. He lauded the employees for braving the challenges and staying on. And those challenges were many, he stressed.
Also speaking at the event were Registrar, Vincent Alexander, and Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Gary Mendonca.
