E’bo spank Berbice by 3 wickets to capture Brandon Memorial Trophy

Essequibo’s ‘A’ team defeated Berbice ‘A’ by 3 wickets to capture the Maurice Brandon Memorial trophy in a limited over game played on Tuesday at the Wakenaam Community Center ground.
In a match which was reduced to 28 overs due to overnight rain, Berbice batted first and found themselves in early trouble losing the wickets of Harrinarine Chattergoon (2) caught at cover off Anthny Adams and Artherly Bailey (1) caught by wicket keeper Herell Green off Adams to leave the score at 17-2.  Rajiv Ivan then joined opener Donminic Ricky and the pair carried the score to 40 before Rickey (9) who was caught. Eon Hooper and Ivan featured in the best of partnership of the innings (32) before Dillon Heyliger removed Hooper (5) to make it 72-4 in the 15 over. Ivan, who was dropped at the wicket off Adams before he had scored, hit the same bowler over long on for 6 and cut him over point for 4. He then benefited from two other drop catches and hit four more sixes before he was caught at long on off Royan Federicks for a top score of 44 (5×6, 1×4) with the score at 90 in the 20th over.
Berbice then lost Jason Sinclair (1), Eugene La Fleur (16) and Keron Fraser (00) before Steven Latcha who made 18 and Periara who was left unbeaten on 14 carried them to 133 with a fighting 9th wicket stand of 27. Latcha was run out off the final delivery of the innings. Adams ended with 3-17 off 6 overs while Royan Federicks 2-26 and Rovin Dusraj 2-29 backed up well.
Essequibo in reply lost an early wicket; Norman Federicks bowled off the inside edge by left arm pacer Devindra Ramoutar in the first over. Royan Federicks and Herell Green added 51 for the second wicket before Green was caught behind off Steven Latchan for 15 in the 8th over.
Royan Federicks was bowled by Latcha for 25 to leave the home team at 56-3. Narenra Madholall was then brilliantly caught by Dominic Ricky at long off as he attempted to hit Latcha out of the ground.
At 62-4, Dillon Heyliger and Oyono Sampson joined forces and took the score to 98 before Heyliger who pulled Chattergoon over midwicket for six was bowled the very next delivery as he played forward for 18.  Chattergoon then trapped Anthony Adams Lbw for a duck as the hosts slipped into further trouble.
Balchan Shivamber who hit Chattergoon over long off for 6 was caught off Rajiv Ivan as he attemped another big shot for 13 at 120 in the 23rd over.
Sampson, who came into the team for the injured Ricardo Adams, hit leg spinner Shawn Pereira over long on and long off for sixes and drove him through the covers for four in his only over which cost 18 runs.
He then flicked Chattergoon to the mid wicket boundary and drove Ivan to long for another four, before Rovin Dusraj drove Fraser thorough the covers for another boundary to seal the game for Essequibo.
Samspon, who was later named man-of-the-match ended unbeaten on 39 (2×6, 3×4) and Dusraj made 4*.  Latcha with 3-16 off 6 overs and Chattergoon 2-20 from 3 were the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as the host ended on 136-7 off 24.2 overs.
The game was played in memory of Maurice Brandon who was a former Secretary of the Essequibo Cricket Board and a junior national selector. (Zaheer Mohamed)
