The driver who allegedly drove his Tapir (a locally constructed motor vehicle) in a callous manner on October 17 and collided with vendor, Rudolph February, 48, of 190 ‘A’ Kingston, Corriverton, killing him on the spot was remanded yesterday when he appeared before Krisendat Persaud at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
He was there to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that John Haynes, 25, of Line Path Skeldon, Corentyne, Berbice, is accused of driving Tapir# H 8617 in a dangerous manner, causing the death of February.
February was killed around 19:15 hrs when the Tapir driven by Haynes, who was allegedly seen drinking with friends during the day, lost control and careened into February, who had just left church at the Agape Ministry at Scotsburg and was waiting to collect his wife who was just emerging from Church.
The Tapir, after hitting the man turned over and ended up on the opposite side of the road. February was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver, who it is understood was under the influence of alcohol, had escaped and was arrested by police the next day.
A post mortem was conducted on the body by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
It revealed that death was due to shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries.
Rudolph February, a father of three, and his wife Azimould, were vendors at the Skeldon Market.
