A Lusignan, East Coast Demerara woman made good on her promise to end her life whenever her mother passed away. Her family has been plunged into double mourning.
The woman, Andranie Singh, 47, hanged herself in her neighbour’s abandoned house, minutes after she discovered that her mother, 64-year-old Ramrattie Singh had quietly passed away at their 176 Lusignan East, East Coast Demerara home.
The two women lived alone, with Andranie having to care for her sick mother, who was suffering from cancer for the past nine years.
Andranie herself had been suffering from a terminal illness, since she was 19 years old, according to relatives.
They informed that she had always threatened to end her life whenever her mother breathed her last breath—in fact she tried to do so on three previous occasions.
Yesterday, Andranie saw her mother lying motionless in her sofa in the bottom flat of their two storey house.
But instead of alerting anyone, the woman crawled through the eastern fence to her neighbour’s abandoned house where she hanged herself.
A relative who went to visit them early yesterday morning discovered 64-year old Ramrattie Singh dead in the house, but could not locate her daughter.
David Singh, Ramrrattie’s son, told this newspaper that he received news of his mother’s death around 07:30 hours.
“I hear my mother passed away and when I come, I see she (Andranie) missing. We look around de place, we search the whole place; all them boys help and when we do go in that house we see she hang she self,” David Singh told this newspaper.
He said that although his sister had threatened to take her life before, he along with other relatives were not prepared for the situation they encountered.
“When I come and did not see her, I expected that she would’a travel way somewhere far or something like that. We didn’t really expect her to hang herself,” David Singh said.
Following the discovery of Andranie’s body hanging by a piece of rope, the police were called in. They immediately launched an investigation.
They ruled out foul play almost immediately having found no marks of violence of the body.
Both bodies were taken away by undertakers from a city funeral parlour to await post mortem examinations.
