Dear Editor,
Three Guyanese boxers defect to the United States and Guyanese ridicule and condemn these young men as criminals and felons. During the PNC era and before, when individuals of all races decided to remain in countries like the USA, Canada and England, it was ok with most.
The current PPP administration has presented an even worst option for young ambitious individuals. Pre-independence, it was your right as a British Subject to remain in England but for the USA and Canada, a visa was required. Many Guyanese who reside in the United States and Canada can attribute their presence in the United States to the fact that they overstayed their visa. They have since complied with the law and are now proud US citizens and this has been happening for at least the last 80 years that I know of.
As American citizens, we should help these young men and ensure that they comply with all the requirements of the law to become legal residents. There are several ways for them to remain in the United States legally, and we should help them to do so instead of condemning them to: death and illegal activities as some have.
Ironically this condemnation is overwhelmingly originating from Guyanese who have already fled Guyana and enjoying the benefits of the ABC and other countries. They have written such vitriolic rhetoric about the young men rather than provide guidance, it is abhorrent.
My Guyanese friends, I am saddened by many of you; I always thought that you were a compassionate group of people, but I have been proven wrong. Many of you talk of patriotism and breaking the law, how many of you are squeaky clean? I am sure almost none. Remember the process for migration is fraught with documentation and information that could have errors whether inadvertently or deliberately and the law states that providing false information on an application for citizenship or immigration is enough for a withdrawal of either or both.
How many of you have demonstrated any patriotism towards Guyana or any of the countries you now reside? Life isn’t about looking for faults in people; life is about finding the talents of individuals and utilizing them for the betterment of whichever group you belong and the human race. In the USA you have the best opportunity.
There are many patriotic men and women that are currently serving in the US military and have served honorably over the years. They too entered the USA illegally and some overstayed their visas. They legalized their status and are proud and brave American citizens. Most of you with the self-righteous comments cannot “walk in their shoes” but you condemn these Guyanese young men with your idea of patriotism.
My friends get out there and assist these young men in complying with the law. They have arrived in the “land of plenty.” In spite of the economic difficulties the United States is still the best country in the world.
We don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable with America. The United States is open to anyone who can make a positive contribution to the betterment of this society and the laws dictate the process. Reach out to these young men and help them follow the law to become legal residences.
Get working on correcting your selfish attitudes my friends, your family and friends will thank you and you may yet add to the improvement of society.
