The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American 10km Road Race Classic’s most consistent and most successful competitor, Cleveland Forde will have to battle the odds again this year to keep an almost perfect record intact. This is since the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) yesterday confirmed that the Brazilians will spearhead a strong international presence at the eighth edition of the race which is scheduled for Sunday, beginning at the Police Sports Club Ground.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce, back from the Commonwealth Games in India, among other officials updated the media on the present status of plans to host the major event that will have as customary its first leg in Guyana before Suriname and Panama.
Boyce said that 43 local athletes and nine overseas-based athletes are so far confirmed to contest the race, figures that are likely to increase over the next two days. The 2009 race had 62 finishers and that is expected to improve with those already confirmed.
The Brazilians, who have always dominated the female race and placed among the top three with wins also in the male race, are set to return with two athletes with Trinidad and Tobago opting to choose a four-man team to represent them at the calendar event.
Apart from those two regionally strong countries, Suriname has confirmed two athletes while the Grenadians would be represented in the form of one athlete. Boyce said that they are still waiting on confirmations from Venezuela, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.
Forde, who won the Guyana and Suriname stages last year and placed second in the Panama leg of the South American Road Race Classic, will lead Guyana’s Challenge in the international race with Trinidad-based, Lionel D’Andrade, who was fourth last year.
Only Brazilian, Eliesio Silva and Trinidad’s Richard Jones separated Forde and D’Andrade when the 2009 race was completed. Alika Morgan will lead Guyana’s challenge in the female category of the race after placing second to Brazilian, Sueli Vieira a year ago.
The winners of both the male and female races will get US$1,000 each while second; third, fourth and fifth places will pocket US$600, US$400, US$300 and US$200 respectively. Prizes will also be awarded in the juniors and masters’ categories of the race.
Today is the closing date for late registration. The Local Organising Committee told the media at the press conference yesterday that an invitation is open to all interested clubs and schools before registration closes at Olympic House today at 5pm.
