Pensioner ‘detained wrongfully’ for more than 72 hours

Relatives of a man who is in his late 60’s are upset over the way the elderly man was allegedly treated by ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
Relatives of Khemlall Lall of Kingston, Georgetown, claim that he was detained by police last Thursday without any specific reason. The man was reportedly taken to the Brickdam police station and placed in custody.
However relatives say that when they attempted to contact him they were prevented from doing so as he was not allowed to communicate with anyone.
This newspaper was told that the man was detained for questioning into a recent execution-style killing.
While the man was in custody, a senior officer of the force told this newspaper that the man was wanted for questioning in relation to the killing of Godfrey Grootfaam and Patrick Goodluck. Relatives who were fearful for the man’s wellbeing, given his age, said from Thursday last to Sunday they were visiting the Brickdam Police Station just to ensure that he was alive and well.
One male relative said he was told by a rank during a visit “we got to get word from a senior officer before we loose he”.
Relatives said they are certain that the police sought an extension from the High Court for Lall, since he was detained beyond the stipulated 72 hours without being charged. They said that to add insult to injury, after being held for so long he was then informed that he was the”wrong person”.
Lall was only released yesterday after his impoverished relatives by some means sought the intervention of a lawyer. Upon his release, the relatives said they were told that “is de wrong man we pick up is not da security we de want is de one who wukking at the school”.
Some two weeks ago, Godfrey Gootfaam and Patrick Goodluck were executed in the vicinity of the Redeemer Primary School at the corner of Stone Avenue and Sixth Street, Campbellville. This newspaper was told that the police had a vested interest in talking with the security guard who was on duty at the school at the time the incident occurred. However, from all indications the lawmen picked up the wrong individual.
This recent incident has driven more fear in citizens who have been asking questions about their basic human rights being trampled upon by the law enforcement agencies.
Many sections of the society in recent times have spoken about the police abusing the law. Only recently the police issued in excess of 13 wanted bulletins, among them some prominent businessmen whom they never made any efforts to locate before issuing the bulletins.
