A Plaisance woman was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court last Monday when she appeared to answer a charge of arson to a dwelling.
Denise Munroe, who is said to be mentally challenged, was charged with setting fire to her 76 Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara residence, resulting in its complete destruction last Thursday night.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge and is still in custody since she could not post bail.
On Thursday last, neighbours braved the heat and pulled a two- year-old from the burning building after Munroe made good on a promise, hours after she was released from police custody.
The woman had been arrested earlier last week after the first attempt to burn her house down failed.
“Three days before she go fuh light afire the house from de gas stove. We out it and we go at the station and mek a report and they come and arrest she,” her son Steve Glasgow related.
He said when they went to the (Sparendaam) police station to enquire about her, they were told that there was no evidence to charge the woman.
Relatives had begun paying close attention to the woman, whose mental condition deteriorated a few months ago, after she had constantly threatened to burn the house down.
But on Thursday night last, the woman was at home alone when she allegedly seized the moment to make good on her threat.
“I lef me brother fuh watch she. Me cousin call me and tell me de house burning down. When I come, I see de whole place burn down. Me ain’t know whey she gone. Nobody ain’t know whey she gone,” Steven Glasgow had told investigators.
“We does watch she but me ain’t know me brother lef and go pon de road,” Glasgow stressed.
This newspaper was told that the woman had begun to show destructive tendencies several months ago when she destroyed all the windows of the house.
Neighbours said that all along they felt that it would have been just a matter of time before something terrible happened.
They believe that the woman should have been committed to the Observation Ward since relatives had reportedly made moves to that effect.
However, according to the woman’s relatives, the Magistrate had declined to commit her.
Kaieteur News understands that the Magistrate’s decision not to commit the woman to the Observation Ward was based on the information provided by relatives.
The relatives had reportedly indicated that Munroe was suffering from domestic problems, and not mental concerns, hence the Magistrate refused to grant the application.
The woman’s relatives have been advised to make another application for her to be committed for observation.
