Police on the West Coast of Demerara are investigating an incident during which a man was shot in the groin by an unknown gunman.
Reports are that 29-year-old Rovin Maniram was shot around 02:30 hours yesterday while entering his home at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop.
Maniram told this newspaper that he did not recognise the person who shot him, and only said the person was barely clothed. According to Maniram, he has been out of a job for some time now but would from time to time assist a friend who operates a shop at the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling.
Maniram told this newspaper that he would normally stay at the shop no later than 10 in the night since it is difficult to get transportation to his home after that hour.
“Sunday night me friend ask me if I could stay till she close up because she went drinking and de li’l high.” The man said that his friend even offered to pay a taxi so that he would get home, which she did.
Maniram said that his apartment is located way down in the back of a yard, and while walking to his apartment he lit his lighter in order to see where he was going.
“As soon as I reach in de yard I flick de lighter and I ain’t see nothing. The second time I flick de lighter I de done pass de first house in de yard and walking toward a chicken pen.”
Maniram recounted that as he continued walking he was confronted by a man with a gun.
“How dis man jump out was like he de waiting fuh thief chicken from de pen but when he see me he jump…from what I estimate, is a wild shot he shoot”.
According to Maniram, he was shot by the man as he (his attacker) was fleeing. “Dis man only had on brief.”
The injured man was assisted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by relatives and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The man told this newspaper that he is expected to undergo a surgery to have the bullet removed as it is still lodged in his groin. Up to press time the man was still a patient at the medical institution as police continue their investigations.
