Dear Editor,
We often hear about vandals destroying schools, health clinics and other public buildings, but it is amazing to witness a man and his two sons willfully removing structures that were installed only a few days ago, early in the day.
Only a few days ago workers had completed the rehabilitation of the road, much to the appreciation and satisfaction of the residents. They also installed a road barrier to prevent heavy duty vehicles from traversing the road. These types of vehicles too often destroy the road causing much discomfort to residents.
It was Monday October 18, 2010 at 06:45 hours. The place was second street Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara. A resident and his two sons were removing the barrier that was installed only a few days ago. They had the pomposity to defy the law, for it seems that they are above the law and can willfully destroy what was installed to protect the newly refurbished road.
Their audacity move further, when they displayed their arrogance and total disregard for anyone in their act of willful destruction. While they were removing the barrier a gentleman and his wife were in their vehicle wishing to pass. Although the man was honking his horn these three ‘destructors’ just look up and continue their destructive task. Are these people really above the law? Neighbours could only look and mumble among themselves.
Although this issue was reported to the authorities on several occasions nothing is done about it. Here again the residents are forced to believe that these people are above the law. Or is it that there are different laws for different category of residents.
It is said that the system failed Ms. Neesa Gopaul, but the views of many are that it is not the system, but the personnel that are tasked with the implementation of the system that are failing the people. This is the reality of the situation in Chateau Margot, Second Street.
This man and his sons are doing what they want without any hindrance from any authority.
Is it that the residents are afraid of them? Is it that the authorities are not aware of what is going on? Or are these people too ‘big’ to handle? Whichever or whatever it is, these people are bent on removing whatever is in the way in getting what they want.
It is hoped that someone will read this letter and initiate the necessary action to stop these people from further destroying public property.
