The three suspects who were caught after robbing a Port Kaituma businesswoman on Friday were yesterday slapped one robbery, one wounding charge and two charges of possession of illegal firearm and ammunition.
The three persons were identified as Kevin Wong, Faraz Mohamed and Neil Singh.
The first charge stated that at Port Kaituma on October 15, they robbed businesswoman Jacklyn James of $6M in cash and five ounces of raw gold.
A second charge stated that Wong on October 15, at Port Kaituma, wounded Detective Corporal Emrit Winter, with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Another charge stated that Wong on the same day had in his possession four live rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm license.
It was further alleged that Wong, on the same day had in his possession one pistol without being the holder of a valid firearm license.
None of the defendants were allowed to plead to the charges, since they were indictable.
Police Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question, about 20:00hrs the three suspects entered James’s home.
He said that the men demanded that the woman hand over her valuables. She did and they escaped after beating her.
The prosecutor further told the court that a police patrol was in the area and immediately gave chase behind the men.
He said that police officer Winter, gave chase and he was shot. Even though Winter was wounded he managed to capture two of the bandits.
The third one was caught the next day.
Mohamed Zafar represented Wong, and asked the court to note his client’s injuries. Prosecutor Harvey made the application for bail to be refused and a date for statements to be set.
The three defendants were remanded and are expected to make another court appearance on December 11, at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court.
According to a police report, on the day in question, the three men entered the home of gold dealer Farouk Ishmael and his wife Jacqueline James. At the time of the robbery only James was home.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commander David Ramnarine has promised that Corporal Winter’s bravery would not go unnoticed by the Force’s administration.
