Overseas based Guyanese and National Cycling Champion Godfrey Pollydore flew into the country only a few days ago, don his cycling gear and rode to victory in the A. Ally and sons sponsored 25th anniversary 46 miles Cycle Road race which was held on Sunday from the A. Ally’s and sons store in Springlands opposite the Springlands Police station to the head office and main store at Main and Coopers Lane in New Amsterdam. This is the 12 year that the company has been sponsoring the race, with special emphasis being placed on the 25th anniversary event.
Pollydore, who resides in Anguilla and of recent has been campaigning with some degree of success in the United States of America, won the race in a fast time of 1hr 45minutes and 29seconds in a driving finish from fellow national cyclist Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams to win by a length. In fact Williams had also only arrived in the country on Saturday evening after representing Guyana in the Commonwealth Games in India.
In winning the event Pollydore carted off the $25,000 first prize along with the A. Ally and sons Anniversary trophy.
A large filed of cyclists including those from Linden and Georgetown travelled to Berbice to compete for attractive prizes.
The event, which was organised by The Flying Aces Cycling Club and coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts, commenced at 09:15 hrs and saw some 51 riders taking to the starting line.
In third Position was Robin Persaud who got the better of Enzo Matthews in another sprint. The other top finishers were Tony Simon, Ricky Kissoon, Warren Mc Kay, Raymond Newton, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson and Orville Hinds who won prizes ranging from $25,000 down, with 10th place pocketing $6,000. Around the Port Mourant area another break occurred with Pollydore, Williams, Matthews, Kissoon Simon and Persaud in the leading pack. That bunch was never caught as they opened a sizable lead and continued their duel for home. Around the Canje Bridge area it was Mathews who made a dash for it, however he was quickly caught by Pollydore and Williams as they raced into New Amsterdam. It was a ding dong battle from there on as the two top cyclists hit it out for home; it was Pollydore who proved his superiority as he crossed the line just ahead of Williams.
The junior category saw Paul De Nobrega upsetting favourite and home town boy Neil Reece to take away the winning $10,000 prize. Reece came in second ahead of Delon Moore and Nashane Jaundoo.

Pollydore after the event thanked the organisers and sponsors for putting up a sizable amount of money for the cyclist to compete for.
The absence of police ranks at the finish line was a sore point, which caused some confusion as the cyclist dodged between traffic.
