Nigel Lampkin and Esan Anderson were the respective winners in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ class categories in the Oasis Water Inc Draughts Tournament which was played on Saturday at the Guyana Legion Hall on Carifesta Avenue.
Lampkin, who ended on 39 points, narrowly defeated Jairam on 38, Grandison Elridge with 37 and Aubrey Rowe on 33.
Anderson had a more comfortable time in his division finishing on 32 points relegating Richard Branche on 27 to the runner-up spot, while Osafo Warde with 24 and Rodrick Cameron 20 completed the top four positions.
The three top places in each category received monetary prizes, while the winners also took away trophies.
The Managing Director of Oasis Water Inc. Wayne Forde in his opening remarks informed the participants that his objective is to bring more young players into the game and also to capture new ones.
He said he believes that it is a beautiful mind game that deserves to be within the company of all other mind games including Chess. Each participant was mandated to introduce five new players to the game and bring them to the next tournament.
A total of $60,000 was up for grabs in what was described as the first edition of what will now become a permanent fixture in the national draughts tournament schedule.
The Company intends to host a tournament every four months and the hope is that very shortly it will include all three categories (A, B & C).
