Banks DIH Ltd. made a donation of $500,000 to the Guyana Relief Fund for Pakistan in the aftermath of the recent flood that has left an estimated 21 million people affected in Pakistan.
Banks DIH Ltd. Communications Manager, Troy Peters, presented a cheque to Chairman of the Guyana Relief Fund for Pakistan, Fazeel M. Ferouz, during a simple ceremony over the weekend.
Peters said that his company sympathised with the people of Pakistan and indicated that the donation would assist to bring relief to those in need of assistance.
Ferouz thanked the local beverage company for its timely assistance in support of the people of Pakistan who were severely affected by the disaster caused by heavy monsoon rain.
He said that the fund has so far raised $29.8 million and money raised locally will be used to provide clean water, proper sanitation, nutritional meals and education to the children of Pakistan.
According to Ferouz, who is also President of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) shortly after the disaster, a Telethon was held at the National Communication Network NCN) and over $22 million was pledged by businesses, religious organisations, civil society and individuals.
The Guyana Relief Fund for Pakistan recently presented a $25M cheque to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in its efforts to aid the flood-hit nation.
The cheque was presented by Ferouz to UNICEF’s Sub Regional Advisor- Geoffrey Ijumba in the presence of Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo and members of the Guyana Relief Fund for Pakistan, the official said.
Approximately 10 million children have been affected as a result of the floods which inundated one fifth of Pakistan’s total land area, destroying large tracts of agricultural lands and crops.
UNICEF in a release recently stated that given the widespread crisis, the risk of child malnutrition looms large, with the very young being extremely vulnerable.
