TAIN, CORENTYNE – Second year students, majoring in computer science at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC), are soon to gain practical knowledge in computer networking.
This idea was born after it was discovered how successful the SHOVA (Summer Hands on Voluntary Apprenticeship) programme held during the August vacation was.
The Summer Hands on Voluntary Apprenticeship initiative targeted six students who were given the basic networking principles in Computer Science among other things.
Professor Daizal R. Samad, Director of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) explained that during a three-day period the second year students would be given a chance to put their knowledge into practice on campus in a tangible way.
They are expected to establish a network in a recently constructed office so that all computers in that building would have internet access and also wireless internet for laptops and other mobile computers. He said the new air-conditioned offices for lecturers would also be connected so that they can carry out research using on-line data. This, the Professor is optimistic would result in greater research output.
The Computer Science students would be exposed to hands on on-site training and given tasks to execute under the guidance of the course lecturer and the network technicians from the UGBC’s computer centre. They would also be guided by some members of the recently held SHOVA programme.
Professor Samad noted that this new initiative would be beneficial to the students since the course would not be all didactic. The necessary paraphernalia are soon to be acquired and then venture would get started.
A list of activities has been indentified and include the crimping and running of cables to enable connectivity between the computers, installation of the DSL modem and server to provide internet access, configuration and installation of wireless router and installation of one APC surge protector and one APC backup battery.
According to Professor Samad, this is the first time such a plan would be put in place at the Berbice Campus. “I could not be happier with the contributions of Mr. Kemuel Gaffar, Mr. Michael Dabydeen, Mr. Aaron Veeren, and Mr. Carl Merai. And I am very pleased with the way the students responded. This is the kind of initiative that makes our campus a better place for all of our UGBC community.”
